Resources for Artists

As a self-directed learner, I’ve had to utilize a lot of different tools online in order to grow.

I’m not an educator, so I’ve compiled a list of my favourite resources for anyone who wants to learn what I know.

YouTube

Tom Walker shares techniques for working with pastels that I use all the time.

Robert Burridge is a really unique painter. I refer to him as a drunk old guy with a paintbrush as he’s usually tipsy in his videos. He prefers to be loose, and will often tape his paintbrush to the end of a stick to create bigger, more flowing brush strokes. I’ve learned more about colour from him than anyone else.

Florent Farges is the most amazing realistic oil painter I’ve ever seen.

Lisa of Lachri Fine Art is an incredible self-taught artist. I’ve learned most of what I know about acrylics from her, especially her method of building layers. And she always shares her latest discoveries with her audience.

I also watch a lot of art history documentaries on YouTube, especially Perspective Arts videos. I’ve learned a LOT from these videos and highly recommend them.

Facebook & Instagram

Robert McAffee posts impressionist demos almost every day on his Facebook page.

This Group is an archive of free reference photos. It has fantastic admins and is a great online space to explore.

BOW Life Drawing provides pre-recorded videos of models that are moving and breathing.

Lena Dirscherl is a body positive artist based in Germany. They facilitate an inclusive community, and create illustrations, beautiful and fun postcards, stickers, etc.

Dylan Julian is my coach. He is a queer, trans man who loves helping other queer people figure out how to get their shit done. He’s really good at HEARING you and helping you connect the dots so that you can thrive.

Books

Atlas of Human Anatomy for the Artist by Stephen Rogers Peck

Paint Landscapes in Acrylic by Lee Hammond

I also recommend checking out your local public library. These community spaces are so important and they only get prioritized if people continue to access them.

Websites

Line of Action is a really cool online space. They have free photos you can access, or you can register for a membership to give you more resources to further your learning.

What are some of your favourite resources for artists who are just starting out or continuing their learning? Share them with me so that I can keep this resource robust and up to date!
