Learning to Self-Coach
Back in December, I hired a life coach. I used to think that life coaches were silly and not really for me. But, this person’s content keeps resonating with me and an opportunity to work with them came up. So, I took it.
I’ve had sports coaches growing up, but I’ve never worked with someone whose sole focus was on helping me move through the world with more awareness and acceptance of myself. At least not in a way that worked for me.
Three weeks into working with them, I started self-coaching.
The Power of Curiosity
Whenever I feel nervous or afraid, I take out my journal and I challenge myself to get curious about what else can ALSO be true.
I’m afraid AND excited about trying something new.
I’m afraid AND I have support.
I’m afraid AND I know it will be okay.
It’s empowering and liberating to free myself in this way. Allowing others to take care of me has been an extremely important part of my journey to finding relaxation.
Therapy Wasn’t a Fit
I tend to be very receptive to positive reinforcement, but I also tend to slip out of those habits. I’ve tried counselors, therapists, psychologists and psychiatrists. None of those appointments compare to my experience with this coach.
Therapy always felt like the goal was to placate me. To calm me down and try to fix me. That just didn’t work. With my life coach, they help me accept and move through the things that I’m experiencing without feeling like I’m dwelling on it.
I shared some of my journal entries with my coach and they said that I wouldn’t need them much longer. That’s a big deal and something worth celebrating!
I’m so proud of myself for investing in ME.
